Don’t describe the world…explore, interpret and ask questions about it
But how to ‘explore, interpret and ask questions’ about the Spirit of Cyprus? Search for an objective definition captured in a single or a few photographs, instantly resonating with any observer? Surely that is presumptuous, pretentious, impossible?
This project is a personal journey - one that portrays a subjective interpretation of the Spirit of Cyprus through a number of Diamantis* style ‘panels’, each concentrating on a specific ‘theme’. These are supplemented by a series of photographic stories or ‘vignettes’ which dive deeper into certain anecdotes picked up on the way. Finally, a number of ‘essays’ give more detailed background on concepts behind, and subjects to be found in, the Spirit of Cyprus project.
This is a proverbial ‘project of a lifetime’, not because of an unfulfilled meandering. Rather, as long as I am able to press the shutter button and my eyes do not let me down, I envisage adding, in the style of Richard Misrach’s Cantos**, new vignettes and essays, as well as refreshing my themes, on my path to enlightenment. So check in from time to time and see what has changed and maybe if you take this journey with me I would be proud if you felt a little of what makes the Spirit of Cyprus.
